Transcripts of adoptions, 1888-1889.

The State Board of Lunacy and Charity, having responsibility for deserted and/or destitute children, sought out opportunities for their adoption. Series contains transcriptions of official adoption record forms. Forms are addressed to county probate court judge, including name of child, names of adults over age twenty-one wishing to adopt and their residence, name of parents if known and their residence, approximate date of birth, reason why child is being adopted (parents unable to support, abandoned) and any changes in name. Documents were originally signed by either the parent of the child or an agent of the State Board of Lunacy and Charity if parentage unknown, by those wishing to adopt, and in some cases by a witness. Occasional newspaper notices or original documents are included.
